Behaviour of alkyl oleates following foliar application in relation to their influence on the penetration of phenmedipham and quizalofop-P-ethyl

Summary The foliar penetration of four alkyl oleates (methyl to butyl) and their influence on the penetration of phenmedipham and quizalofop-P-ethyl was studied in barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), cleavers (Galium aparine L.) and pea (Pisum sativum L.). Loss of alkyl oleates from glass and plant surfaces was inversely related to the length of the alkyl chains and was assumed to be due to volatilization. All four alkyl oleates after application alone, readily penetrated into pea and barley leaves but much less into G. aparine. Penetration of methyl oleate appeared to be faster than that of butyl oleate. Both alkyl oleates were completely metabolized in barley and pea in 27 h, but not in G. apari…
Evidence for a geranyl-diphosphate synthase located within the plastids of Vitis vinifera L. cultivated in vitro

Intact plastids from cell suspensions of Vitis vinifera L. cv. Muscat de Frontignan, free of detectable contamination by other particles as judged by the distribution of organelle-specific marker enzymes and by electron microscopy, exhibit geranyl-diphosphate synthase activity (EC 2.5.1.1). This synthase activity remains stable after tryptic digestion of unlysed organelles and is enhanced by plastid disruption. We conclude that the enzyme is located within the organelle. The possibility of an isopentenyl diphosphate/dimethylallyl diphosphate translocating system which would play a major role in the regulation of monoterpene metabolism is discussed.

Abstract Elicitins are a family of small proteins secreted by Phytophthora species that have a high degree of homology and elicit defense reactions in tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum). They display acidic or basic characteristics, the acidic elicitins being less efficient in inducing plant necrosis. In this study we compared the binding properties of four elicitins (two basic and two acidic) and early-induced signal transduction events (Ca2+ influx, extracellular medium alkalinization, and active oxygen species production). Abstract Synthesis of mono-esters of tetraethylene glycol and di-esters of tetraethylene glycol was accomplished from fatty acids and tetraethylene glycol in the absence of solvent and catalyst. Esterification was studied in a batch reactor by using a response surface methodology to evaluate the influence of synthesis variables such as molar substrate ratio of fatty acid relative to tetraethylene glycol (1.39–7.52), temperature (145–167°C), reaction time (0.5–8 h) on the yield of mono- and di-esters of tetraethylene glycol. Quantitative determination of potent flavor compounds in Burgundy Pinot noir wines using a stable isotope dilution assay

A specific experimental procedure suitable for the quantification of four esters recently identified in a wine of Vitis vinifera cv. Pinot Noir, ethyl dihydrocinnamate (A), ethyl cinnamate (B), methyl anthranilate (C), and ethyl anthranilate (D), was developed and applied to 33 Burgundy wines (calculated on three replicates). The method, involving a stable isotope dilution assay, allows the determination of concentrations from 0.05 μg L-1, with a repeatability better than 10%. Biodiversity-functioning relations in microorganisms

The role of microorganisms as key components in the functioning of ecosystems and biodiversity is discussed. The latest methodologies developed to study microbial diversity and functioning of ecosystems are considered, as DNA extraction and isotope labeling, fluorescent in situ hybridization and microautoradiography, and tracking of a substrate labeled with a stable isotope. Investigations related to correlations between microbial diversity and functioning in situ are considered. An example is illustrated of a correlation of erosion of microbial diversity of natural microbial community in prairie soil and erosion of species diversity in an ecosystem.
